Projects
SevilPeach Architecture+Design have chosen Kvadrat textiles for the third and fourth Spaces buildings in the Netherlands. Designed to host mobile workers, freelancers, start-ups and established companies, these emphasise a co-working environment. Following the success of their second project – Zuidas 1, in Amsterdam – Spaces expanded to the adjacent building, which is named Zuidas 2. This involved completely remodeling the original space to create a softer, non-corporate identity.
The redeveloped building now offers a variety of co-working zones and social spaces. These include: a double height reception room, a library, a Club Room for quiet work, work booths, study rooms, meeting rooms and a multi-functional restaurant. For their fourth location, Spaces acquired The Red Elephant, a landmark listed building in The Hague. This was originally built in 1919 for the American Petroleum Company and was later Esso’s Headquarters.
The challenge for SevilPeach was to transform this extraordinary building into a new business destination by blending a contemporary work environment suitable for Spaces’ identity whilst respecting the character of the listed building. The unwanted later additions were stripped away to allow the atrium to return its former glory, introducing a café bar and visual connections to the adjacent work areas. This central space became the social heart of the building. The surrounding areas were stripped back to their bare shell, providing larger-than-life spaces, accommodating different moods and functions reflecting a dynamic environment.
The finishes used throughout are inspired by and sympathetic to the building’s history. As a result, the interior captures the charm of the old and the freshness of the contemporary.
