Peter's House

Inspired by warehouses and rooftop gardens
Photographer Peter Krasilnikoff’s private residence and studio sits on the site of an old garage in Copenhagen’s Islands Brygge harbour. The building’s concept explores ‘new materiality’ and is designed by architectural practice Studio David Thulstrup. The inspiration for the building, which features bespoke furniture, was old warehouses and factories, as well as urban rooftop gardens. Reflecting this, the architects retained the raw brick walls of the original site and introduced lush greenery.

A light-filled oasis
An atrium is placed at the centre of the building, which ensures all three floors are filled with light. This incorporates dark mirror panelling that creates the perception of being in a far larger space. The atrium also includes Scandinavian grasses and a feature tree to create a verdant ‘oasis’. The downstairs area combines textural and colour contrasts. It includes the entrance, an open-plan kitchen, a dining room and a sitting room. In these areas raw poured concrete contrasts with blackened steel panelling and the original raw brick walls.
Upstairs, a glass-walled ‘roof-room’ opens up towards a richly planted terrace. This enables the viewer to see that that entire building is clad with vertical strips from Brazilian hardwood, which will weather into silvery nuances over time.

The velvety Harald textile by Kvadrat/Raf Simons is used for upholstery and curtains.
