Cultural living room

Opera House seating at the Nanchang Poly Grand Theatre in China is upholstered with two Kvadrat textiles. The landmark cultural venue is in a new area by the picturesque Jiulong Lake.

The 1,612 opera seats combine two textiles, Ria and Field, in complementary blue tones. Ria is specified on the headrests to highlight the most visual part of the chair, while Field is employed on the other parts.

Both textiles were chosen for their durability and their aesthetic quality. They match the banded shapes inside the opera hall which are inspired by the layered topography of the lakeside shores of the Jiulong lake-system.

Martin Lukasczyk, Architect SAFA, Partner, Design Manager/ Performance Spaces: “The PES-Architects and Kvadrat collaboration works fluently due to the close contact between the architectural and the textile designers. While working on demanding public buildings worldwide, which our clients want to be outstanding landmark buildings both visually and functionally, it is important to be flexible and professional with textile choices and suggestions. It’s also helpful for us architects to have quick access to textile samples and to be able to frequently discuss with Kvadrat in person to find the best design solutions together.”

The 45,000 sqm Nanchang Poly Grand Theatre comprises three volumes clad in a cable-suspended China White ceramic veil: Opera Hall, Multifunctional Hall and Culture Center. It unites high-quality materials and detailing with timeless design, ensuring sustainability by combining a long lifespan and low maintenance.
